I am writing to express my great delight at this season's fantastic Frizzell County Championship victory by Sussex County Cricket Club.

I have waited 72 years for this moment and can't begin to describe how proud I am.

Mushtaq Ahmed has enabled the team to win matches that would previously have been drawn.

Chris Adams deserves enormous credit for moulding a tremendous spirit within the team, which has allowed us to pull through some sticky moments.

In every game you could pick out one individual who has performed at crucial times - like Mark Davis' innings against Middlesex - and this typifies the team spirit that has made us champions.

Long may it continue.

I was very privileged that, as a young child, my uncle - Charlie "Juggy" Holden - was head groundsman at the County Ground and I was one of the few people allowed beyond the thick rope that encircled the ground in those days.

The pitches Charlie prepared were of such quality that other counties used to seek him out for his advice.

I used to go "fagging" for the likes of Denis Compton and Bill Edrich for cigarettes or little notes to the ladies who used to attend the matches.

Such reminiscences make the present side's triumph even more special when I think of all the greats who have played on that turf.
