Sterling Davis has spoken of his shock at being cut by London Towers.
The former Brighton Bears star was preparing to take on his old club at Crystal Palace on Saturday when coach Robbie Peers told him he was no longer part of the Towers squad.
Mick Sandhu, Davis's Detroit-based agent, now expects to find his client employment outside the United Kingdom.
Saturday's showdown in South London still promises to be a spicy tussle as Bears coach Nick Nurse, assistant Graham Wilson, skipper Randy Duck and likely starters Kendrick Warren and Andy Gardiner take on their most recent BBL employers.
Ralph Blalock and Emiko Etete, both part of Bears' cup-winning side last season, are expected to line-up for Towers.
Davis hit 20 points in last Sunday's game at Scottish Rocks, who are coached by former Bears assistant Steve Swanson.
It was not enough, however, to stave off a third defeat in as many games, followed by the axe.
Davis told The Argus: "Being cut was a shock to me. There are always rumours down there about guys who might get cut but I didn't really expect it.
"I suppose you go 0-and-3 and they think they have got to make changes.
"I knew how they operate and that guys have been cut pretty fast but I guess I didn't think about that at the time.
"That's just how this job is. I'm not sure what happens now.
"My agent will give me a call when something comes through."
Sandhu last night revealed: "We have many options on the table right now.
"He will most likely not stay in the UK but we will decide in a week or so when some of the options we are waiting on possibly materialise."
Although Towers are looking at bringing in highly-rated replacements for Davis and John Whorton, Bears will still be delighted they do not have to contain the man who has been their MVP in the past two seasons.
Games with Towers and then Newcastle at the Brighton Centre on Sunday offer a timely challenge for a Bears side who have breezed through their first three matches.
Newcastle won at Towers recently and are a decent outside bet for silverware this season.
Back court man Mike Brown is looking forward to the double test, and to confronting Blalock.
He said: "No disrespect to the teams we have played but I think we need a challenge right now.
"You can get into a false sense of security at the beginning of the season and think 'We can show up and just play okay and still win'.
"A prime example was when we went to Milton Keynes, although we ended up with a ten-point win.
"I'm looking forward to playing against Ralph again. I came up against him when he was at Leicester and we had some good battles."
Brown has not met up with Blalock since last season, nor has he seen Davis recently. That, however, is one reunion that will have to wait for now.
