Fumes from a tramp's blazing mattress smokelogged a library in Eastbourne after being dragged in through its ventilation system.
Firefighters were called to the central library in Grove Road just before 11.30pm yesterday after being alerted by smoke alarms.
They arrived to find the basement smokelogged but established it was because a mattress had been set alight below an outside ventilation system.
A brigade spokesman said: "We checked the library thoroughly using thermal imaging cameras but established there were no pockets of fire inside."
The library was open today.
