Littlehampton rekindled some fond memories as they clinched a place in the second round with an impressive 2-1 win at AFC Newbury.

The Marigolds remain the only Sussex side to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Carl Stabler was boss when they reached the last four in 1991 and is now in his third spell in charge at the club.

Goals from Clinton More and Derek Chester secured victory against a Newbury side managed by former Portsmouth striker Guy Whittingham.

Stabler said: "It was the best we have played all season against a very good Newbury side. It reminded me of the old Vase run and it would be nice to take this further."

Whitehawk came from behind to beat Sussex rivals Mile Oak 6-1. Scott Carden gave the second division side a first-minute lead but strikes from Ryan McBride, Dean Venton, Tommy Pattenden, Tom Levitt, Jamie Lambert and the outstanding Terry Cooper took Hawks through.

Boss Ian Chapman said: "It might sound critical after winning 6-1 but we are still not playing as fluently as we can. I am just pleased to be in the next round."

Three Bridges entertain Whitchurch United in a replay at the Jubilee Field tomorrow after extra time failed to split the sides on Saturday.

Ryan Hackett gave Bridges a half time lead but Paul Roffey levelled with a header.

Bridges had chances to win but Pat Massaro (twice) and Simon Funnell were denied by the home keeper.

Two other County League sides lost in extra time. Steyning went down 1-0 at Moneyfields while Redhill were beaten 3-2 at home to North Leigh despite twice coming from behind. Two-goal Luke Jones scored one penalty for Redhill, missed another and was denied another just before the end.

Hailsham lost 4-0 to guests Gosport Borough while St Leonards slipped 2-0 at Thatcham Town. Horsham YMCA lost 3-1 at Maidstone yesterday.
