Dean Barker missed out on the Elite League Riders' Championship after leading the field for most of Saturday night's meeting at Coventry.
Barker won three of his first four races and was second in the other but then had to go into a run-off for a place in the final after failing to score in his last ride.
He was then eliminated, while one of the riders who finished below him, Andreas Jonsson, went through.
The title went to one-time Arlington junior Lee Richardson, who beat Jonsson and Scott Nicholls in the final.
While Richardson and Jonsson completed a one-two on their home track, Jason Crump was again the unlucky rider.
Crump, runner-up in the world championship for three years in succession, topped the scorers at Coventry with 13 points, but blew a motor on the start line in the final.
Leading scorers: Jason Crump 13, Scott Nicholls 11, Lee Richardson 11, Dean Barker 11, Andreas Jonsson 10, Billy Janniro 10, Mark Loram 8. Final: Richardson, Jonsson, Nicholls, Crump.
