Had I got wind of their intentions earlier, I would have immediately contacted the people of Navatusila, on the Fijian island of Viti Levu, to assure them there is no reason to apologise for the death of the East Sussex missionary, the Rev Thomas Baker, who ended up in one of their cooking pots in 1867.
He had it coming to him. He was, after all, intent on destroying their culture and beliefs and supplanting them with his own pernicious superstition, Christianity.
The apology for Baker's death is officially due to be made next month because the locals have got it into their heads that a series of misfortunes that befell their village over the years was the result of their ancestors killing and eating the Wesleyan Methodist Church minister.
