Sussex have re-signed Pakistani leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.

Mushtaq, who played a key part in the county's Championship success, has agreed a new two-year deal.

But Sussex have the option of curtailing the contract should Mushtaq's county commitments be affected by appearances for Pakistan.

He played in the first match in the recent one-day series against South Africa but was not included in the team which won the first Test in Lahore yesterday.

Pakistan are not due to play any Test cricket during next year's English domestic season although they are committed to the ICC Trophy one-day competition in England next September.

Director of cricket Peter Moores said: "He's happy to get stuck in and commit himself to Sussex and I'm pretty sure he will be with us throughout the next two seasons."

Mushtaq became the first bowler to take 100 first-class wickets in a season since 1998, finishing with 104. He was named player of the year by the Professional Cricketers' Association.

He could have another Pakistani bowler alongside him next season with Mohammad Akram likely to join the county once he becomes English qualified through residency before the end of the year.
