Like Sheila Coverdale (Letters, October 25), I too am sad at the recent death of film star and dancer Donald O'Connor.
Watching re-runs of the hit movie Singing In The Rain with Gene Kelly, it is O'Connor who seems to dance the complicated routines so effortlessly.
In the movie Call Me Madam, O'Connor performs a wonderful white tie and tails number.
He was also a child star and, as a young man, was in a hit series of movies as a GI who encountered a mule called Francis who talked.
Francis The Talking Mule ran to six or seven more movies, the first six starring O'Connor with Francis the Mule, the last starring Mickey Rooney (happily Rooney is still going strong).
Chip Off The Old Block (1944), starring O'Connor and Peggy Ryan, as mentioned by Sheila, also starred singer Ann Blyth who went on to be a big star in many musical movies.
