I was amazed at the rejection of Iain Duncan Smith by a clear majority of Tory MPs and the equally indecent rush by Michael Howard to proclaim himself successor.
With such historical parallels as the strange death of Liberal England under the divisive, burnt-out Asquith and Lloyd George and Blair's evisceration of even democratic socialism, could we now be witnessing a third political suicide?
