Hasn't the mild and sunny weather been glorious this year? Humans, animals and birds alike have enjoyed it.
However, wild animals and birds born late in the season are now suffering and dying.
Creatures like hedgehogs can have several nests of young depending on the weather conditions.
It is now, as the weather changes suddenly from warm to cold, that underweight and hypothermic hedgehogs are being found out in the daylight as they struggle to find food in the cold weather.
Badgers regulate the number of young born each year depending on factors like food availability and population levels.
This year, many badger groups have reported very low numbers of cubs being born. Many believe this is due to the extremely dry weather we have had, causing their natural food to become sparse.
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) has dealt with 15 badger casualties this year, which is three times higher than our yearly average.
Many of these have been emaciated or attacked by other badgers as they invade neighbouring territories trying to find food.
Fledgling doves are still being found covered in fluff when they should be fully feathered and flying by now.
East Sussex WRAS is normally quite quiet at this time of year but calls are higher than usual as these youngsters are being found.
Seek advice if you find any wildlife casualties. Please recycle, reuse, conserve fuel and help cut the pollution that causes global warming. I would hate to live in a Sussex without the rich diversity of wildlife that we enjoy today.
If anyone would like to make a donation towards our work or join as a supporter, please send a cheque payable to East Sussex WRAS to 49 Station Road, Hailsham, East Sussex BN27 2BN.
