Chris McPhee put a stop to some friendly stick from his Albion team-mates with a two-goal late show at Withdean on Tuesday night.
McPhee struck twice in extra time, one a penalty, as the Seagulls edged past Boston 3-1 in the second round southern section of the LDV Vans Trophy.
It ended a mini drought for the 20-year-old striker from Eastbourne dating back to the home win against Blackpool a month ago, when he also netted twice.
McPhee said: "I am just glad I've eventually got back on the score sheet. People have tried to rib me in training that I have gone on a bit of a famine but I go on performances.
"I am pleased with the way I am playing at the moment and the goals are just a bonus."
McPhee took on board advice from manager Mark McGhee, a former centre forward himself, to increase his season's tally to six.
McGhee, taking charge at Withdean for the first time, said: "I think he deserved the goals. He has worked so hard in the two games that I have been here and has played well into the bargain.
"I said to him at half time I felt he was laying the ball off every time and that he had to get facing people.
"He took it on board instantly. Straight away in the second half he was looking to run at people. It changed his game a little bit and helped him score the first goal.
"I had been told before I came here he's a lad with ability who works very hard.
"People at the club felt he was maybe getting a little jaded and needed a rest but he has suddenly found energy.
"I think a new manager's arrival, not particularly me, has brought a bit out of him to try and keep his place and impress and we have benefitted."
McPhee was one of five youth team products on the pitch by the end of the match. They included 19-year-old Adam El-Abd, who made his debut in the centre of defence with captain Danny Cullip resting minor injuries.
McGhee said: "That says a lot about what has gone on here before and what is going on here now with the lads in that department.
"For a club like us it is going to be vital to keep producing these sort of boys. They will get a chance under me. Historically I have always played lads at that age."
McGhee also defended recalled goalkeeper Ben Roberts for the mistake which forced Albion into extra time.
