I read the article about the dedication of the Kohima Stone at the Brighton War Memorial with great interest (The Argus, November 7).
The battle of Kohima was one of the bloodiest of World War Two and most of the fighting was hand to hand. The battle produced so many heroes and one Victoria Cross.
The Royal West Kents were cut off by the Japanese army but held them off for two weeks until the siege was lifted by the British 2nd Division.
By the regiment's heroic action, the 14th Army at Imphal (who were themselves surrounded) were able to fight their way out of the "Imphal Box" and so keep the Japanese out of India.
