An East Sussex couple targeted twice by ram-raiders say they fear a rise in vigilante activity unless burglary victims are given more protection.
Peter Dunn, a former magistrate and High Sheriff of East Sussex, and wife Jane have written to Sussex chief constable Ken Jones after being burgled twice in ten weeks.
Last week The Argus reported how burglars ram-raided the couple's country hotel near Heathfield, making off with antique furniture worth thousands of pounds.
The couple said they were afraid to sleep at night after hearing reports of similar raids in the area, some interrupted by householders.
Mrs Dunn said more support was needed for victims and issuing a crime reference number was simply not enough.
She said: "We are trying to get representation to the Chief Constable because there are so many burglaries around here. As a former JP my husband also feels very strongly that something must be done."
Referring to the Norfolk farmer jailed for shooting dead a burglar in his home, Mr Dunn said: "If this isn't stopped there will be more Tony Martins, more vigilante activity.
"There's a lot of feeling less law-abiding citizens might take the law into their own hands."
After featuring in the media, Mrs Dunn was called by a police officer who advised her to register her missing items with a scheme which traces stolen goods. He called round in person to deliver the sign-up forms.
Among the items stolen were seven 18th Century card tables and a wine cooler.
