Simon Smith is quite entitled to voice his opinion on George Bush's visit to this country but he shows utter contempt and hatred for Royalty and our Queen (Letters, November 24).
It was the help given to us by the USA in two world wars that has given him the freedom to voice that opinion.
As for his idea that the British people should have a republican state, where would that leave this little country called England? Can he envisage Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland becoming states of Britain?
These are all countries in their own right, bound together by Royalty.
What a bland, uninteresting Britain we would become without the magnificent history and pageantry that goes with Royalty and which binds us with countries throughout the world which used to be our Empire.
The interest of history and Royalty draws thousands of people to our islands.
