Extending the pedestrianisation hours in George Street, Hove, has had a detrimental effect on a number of traders as fewer parking spaces now have to be shared by more businesses.
Most traders, when told there would be more spaces in the new Tesco car park in Church Road, thought this would help the whole area.
But two months after the Tesco store opened we have a clear picture. There are now many empty spaces where previously there was a derelict gas works and what was previously a municipal car park is now a school.
To add to the problems, the recent parking restrictions in the Pembroke area, while definitely a help to residents, have seen some of those areas bereft of cars but awash with space during vital daytime trading hours.
One trader has hijacked the town centre parking facilities for shoppers, which had always been available to all the shops in the area. This action is severely damaging the business of most, if not all, other traders.
An area intended to be revitalised is fast dying and the losers will be the residents of Hove.
