More roadworks are planned for the main gateway into Brighton and Hove.
Members of the city's environment committee are being recommended to approve two more phases of the A23 sustainable transport scheme on Thursday.
The aim is to make the road easier and more pleasant to use for cyclists, pedestrians, bus users and drivers.
There have been delays for months at the junction of the A23 with Preston Drive and the work has still not finished.
Now councillors are likely to approve work between Knoyle Road and The Deneway. Work will start next year.
This will include bus lanes, three toucan crossings, cycle lanes and street lighting improvements.
Some sections of the cycle lane will have to go on to the pavement where the road is narrow but riders will be kept apart from pedestrians.
Future phases of work on the road from The Deneway to the Brighton bypass will be carried out between 2005 and 2007.
