Police officers in East Sussex used pepper spray on two men who hurled abuse at them after their friend allegedly gave a positive roadside breath test.
The officers were carrying out drink-drive checks when they stopped a Range Rover carrying three men in Muddles Green, Chiddingly, near Hailsham.
After the Range Rover driver allegedly gave a positive breath test, his two passengers became abusive.
A force spokesman said the officers feared for their safety and used pepper spray to keep the pair at bay before arresting them.
Both have been released on police bail pending further inquiries following Sunday morning's incident.

A man was headbutted and punched repeatedly in an unprovoked attack.
Two men stopped the victim and started talking to him as he walked near shops in Collington Avenue, Bexhill.
Police say one of them suddenly headbutted the victim while the other man swung punches.
The victim fled to the nearby shops where the alarm was raised at 10.30am on Monday.
