Crawley Wheelers have cancelled their Good Friday time trial after successfully promoting the event for over 20 years.
The club made its decision after the London South District time trial committee banned riders from passing through Handcross because of safety concerns.
Promoter John Double said: "We use experienced marshals and have never had any problems or complaints. I would like riders to contact the Crawley club and let us have their views." His number is 01293 546678.
Brighton Mitre rider Tristan Court is in line to become the club's most successful cyclist since it was formed in 1894.
He already holds the club's time trial records for 10, 25, 30 and 100 miles, matching the record of Gerry Atterbury in the 1960s.
Court is also the only member to have held a world title after winning the International Cycling Federation's time trial championship in 2000.
In Gear rider James Dear, who recently moved to Polegate, had bad luck while riding in the South-East senior cyclo-cross championship at London's Eastway circuit. Five miles into the 13-mile event he was lying in fourth place when he punctured. Peter Middleshurst (Eastern Velo) won the title. Hassocks rider Rik Taub (In Gear) finished 21st in the Southern veterans' championship held at Newbury.
