AS most people in Sussex shielded themselves from the cold snap, others were braving freezing sea temperatures for a New Year's Day dip.
In Littlehampton, 11 people dived in opposite the Littlehampton Swimming and Sport Centre on the seafront in cold but sunny conditions.
They were mostly parents of members of Littlehampton Swimming Club, a 149-strong association which competes in Speedo Division 1.
Club members are hoping to raise £13,000 to buy an electronic timer.
They hope to raise up to £600 from yesterday's dip, part of which will go to the Chestnut Tree Appeal.
In Seaford, ten people stripped off and immersed themselves in sub-zero sea water opposite the lifeguard station headquarters.
Among the hardy few to venture in, in aid of the lifeguard station, were town mayor Jon Freeman and town clerk Len Fisher.
Collecting tins were on the beach for people to drop off donations as the participants spent just a few minutes splashing around before retreating.
Secretary Peggy Crossman said: "Quite a few went in up to their knees while others fully immersed themselves."
The New Year's Day dip has been a regular feature in Seaford for more than 30 years.
