The Rev John Webster (Letters, January 2) complains that Lewes's "No Popery" effigies on Bonfire Night are outdated and should be banned.
If such religious friction harks back to an era which should be consigned to history, so does Rev Webster's self-glorifying suggestion that Lewes's churches should "take the lead" in turning November 5 into a "Festival of Light".
He ought to accept that the Church - be it Protestant or Catholic - just does not have same place in people's hearts that it once did.
Leave Lewes alone, Rev Webster. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.
