At present much of Brighton and Hove's rubbish is placed on the street in plastic sacks before collection.

This causes multiple problems as seagulls tear bags apart, rubbish spills onto the street and people often put their rubbish out on the wrong day. Sometimes those living in flats feel they have little choice as they have no off-street storage.

For these reasons Brighton and Hove City Council is right to try to find more effective ways of containing household waste before collection.

In leafy suburbs wheely-bins may be the answer. In terraced streets, residents could be asked to place their bags into boxes.

In the most populated parts of the city, on-street containers ought to at least be given a chance through a pilot scheme.

This approach is working effectively in Edinburgh and other European cities.

It is understandable that there are concerns but these are being addressed.

Personally, I hope on-street containers succeed in improving the environment and rid our streets of ugly plastic sacks.
