Burgess Hill were forced to settle for just a point after drawing at Newport Isle of Wight despite dominating possession and creating more chances.
The visitors started brightly and could have taken the lead in the ninth minute when Ashley Carr shot wide from close range.
However, Newport fought back and opened the scoring nine minutes later.
Striker Chris Bridges rose above Hillians goalkeeper Pat Gannon and saw his header cleared into the path of Alex Perry who duly fired home.
Hillians responded well and began to pile on the pressure in the latter stages of the first half. On the stroke of half time Nicky Sullivan's header cleared the crossbar by a matter of inches.
The Sussex outfit finally equalised in the 67th minute when a low cross from Sullivan was bundled home by Carr.
Both sides hit the woodwork before Hillians' Julian Curnow failed to find the target with a free header at the death.
