A team of Red Cross volunteers will be made homeless after being evicted by people they protect.

Members of the group have six weeks to find new offices after being told to leave their cabin near Newhaven railway station by Newhaven Port Authority.

The volunteers are first aid experts and have helped treat injured people at the port and neighbouring station.

Centre organiser Emily Tester said: "We're being kicked out without any real warning.

"We're angry because we've been here ten years and during that time we have helped everyone in the community.

"There has been a lot of hard work to keep the centre going, building up trust and a relationship with everyone in the area."

Volunteer co-ordinator David Copps said: "We were hoping to expand this year, with a new medical loans facility where people could rent Zimmer frames and wheelchairs.

"This has hit us hard but we're determined it will not bring an end to the group.

"We desperately need somewhere in Newhaven or Peacehaven so for now we'll have to run the group from our own homes."

Red Cross members have provided first aid support for festivals and charity events in Newhaven for more than a decade.

They are being asked to leave the site because the port authority is clearing the area for redevelopment.

The improvements will include new service roads to improve traffic flow and extra parking.

There will also be extended storage areas for cargo and lorry trailers.

Ports manager Phillipe Echelard said: "We need the land for development and unfortunately there is no other land we can allow the Red Cross to have.

"We are looking to use the maximum amount of the area that we have at our disposal to increase the profit of the port."
