A rubber recycling plant could jeopardise the regeneration of a seaside town, local councillors are warning.
Newhaven Town Council has objected to the proposal, claiming it could add a tyre mountain to an already large amount of scrap at East Quay.
Town clerk Ian Everest said the plant would be opposite parts of the West Quay that have already been redeveloped or where the work is scheduled.
He said: "It is basically putting the regeneration of this part of the town at risk."
Southern Tyre and Rubber Recycling wants to build the shredding works at a trailer park at East Quay, close to the town's sewage treatment works.
The site is next to the Ouse Estuary Project where land has been landscaped and made more wildlife friendly, to offset the environmental damage caused by port redevelopment.
East Sussex County Council said recycling facilities were needed and the scheme would only involve shredding rubber rather than heavy industrial processes.
Planners have asked for a report to be made on any potential fire risk from tyres stored at the site.
County councillors have been recommended to approve the scheme, when they meet to consider the company's planning application on Wednesday.
