Tony Blair is right to push for students to contribute more towards the cost of their degrees.

A culture has developed where young people are being unnecessarily pressured into going to university and are taking degrees in subjects which have little relevance to their futures.

Having to contribute more towards the costs might make the prospective students, their mentors and advisers think more carefully about which university they attend and the course they take.

It will also make universities more accountable to students for the quality of the degrees they offer as too many have cobbled together trendy degrees with little academic content.
