A doctor who operated on patients while infected with hepatitis B has failed in a bid to salvage his career.

Giridhar Katti, who worked at Eastbourne District General Hospital in 2001, was suspended by the General Medical Council (GMC) in May for failing to disclose his condition.

The surgeon knew he had the killer disease when he applied for jobs, including the post at Eastbourne, but withheld the information and failed to return a crucial medical questionnaire.

A High Court judge has now dismissed his challenge to the suspension, saying the GMC took the view Katti's behaviour undermined public confidence.

Mr Justice Pitchford said he had put patients at risk, adding his conduct had been "inappropriate, dishonest and misleading".

Katti was employed as a staff surgeon at Eastbourne between November and December 2001.
