Council tax-payers in Brighton and Hove may be spared two per cent of a feared increase.
Two months ago, city councillors were told the likely rise would be 16.5 per cent.
Last month, finance councillor Simon Burgess said it should be possible to knock down the rise to 13.9 per cent, easing pressure on householders and reducing the risk of the city council being capped by the Government.
The policy committee will be asked on Wednesday to cut the rise to 11.9 per cent. Chief finance officer Chris Taylor said it should be possible due to three per cent savings and a surplus on the collection fund.
If this is agreed, tax for a typical Band D householder would rise to £1,032.91.
But this does not take account of a probable 7.55 per cent rise in the police levy, adding another £105.12, and a smaller levy by East Sussex Fire Authority.
