A car trader has been fined £525 for illegally selling vehicles from the roadside without a licence to trade.

Howard Blackford, 69, of Ladies Mile Road, Patcham, operated an open-air car showroom from a lay-by off the main A23 London Road, near the junction with Carden Avenue.

He was prosecuted as a result of a campaign by Brighton and Hove City Council to combat the illegal sale of vehicles at the roadside.

Blackford pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court to six offences of failing to disclose trade in his advertisements and three offences of trading in the street without a licence.

He was fined £525 with £250 costs.

Magistrates were told Trading Standards investigators had monitored and photographed the vehicles being sold for six months, during which time details of 20 vehicles were recorded.

Blackford was identified as the trader responsible following a joint operation carried out by trading standards officers and Sussex Police.
