One must sympathise with the officers of Worthing's planning department, who are faced with the daunting task of getting to grips with the vast volumes of data and plans relating to the new Tesco superstore and the West Durrington Development applications.
If these professional town planners find it a three-month labour of love, how then can the layperson get to grips with it in the couple of weeks allotted for comments to be placed with the council? Clearly it's impossible and unreasonable, especially as the residents of Durrington have to traipse all the way into town to see the plans.
A more reasonable cut off for comments would be the end of March with the plans more conveniently available at the Durrington community centre.
With a bit of knowledge of planning matters, I was able to see from the data that the Tesco store would be huge and likely to attract four or five times the amount of traffic as the present store.
That, together with traffic associated with the proposed neighbourhood centre and first phase of 850 houses, would overwhelm Durrington and the surrounding area.
