Two pieces of individual skill from Dillet Gilkes helped East Grinstead maintain their lead at the top of National League division two.
Gilkes set up simple finishes for Duncan Howarth and teenager Ashley Jackson as Grinstead came from behind to beat lowly Leek 3-2.
However, the performance did not please player-coach Kwan Browne, who had earlier put Grinstead with his 12th goal of the season from a short corner.
Browne said: "It was a dull, scrappy game with little goalmouth action.
"The performance was extremely poor but at least we won."
Second placed Old Georgians won 8-2 at fifth placed Havant.
Lewes threw away a half-time lead as they lost 2-1 at home to Indian Gymkhana.
Danny Poulsen scrambled home an opener but the visitors levelled from a penalty stroke and then grabbed a winner eight minutes from time when Lewes were down to nine men due to yellow cards.
Skipper Ryan Standing, one of three players sin-binned, said: "We took our foot off the pedal in the second half and let them get back into it."
Former Lewes player Ben Hawes was on the scoresheet as Great Britain warmed up for next month's Olympic qualifying tournament with a 6-4 defeat of Belgium on Saturday.
Worthing Ladies reached the quarter-finals of the HA Vase after beating West Wilts on penalty strokes. The match had finished 4-4 with Shelley Formstone (three) and Karen Howison on target.
