I am writing to express my disgust at the uncharitable behaviour of the staff at The Station pub in Hove last Friday night.
I had spent the evening there celebrating my friend's birthday and we left at one o'clock in the morning when it closed.
While we were waiting for a taxi, a gentleman collapsed at the bus stop opposite and hit his head on the ground. We helped him into a cab where he began to roll his eyes and lose consciousness.
We phoned an ambulance but the cab driver wouldn't let us stay in the cab to keep him warm so we had to help him out on to the pavement.
It was very cold and we found it difficult to keep him warm despite covering him with our coats. We approached the pub where the staff were clearing up but they refused to open the door.
The ambulance arrived after approximately 15 minutes by which time the man was frozen.
The staff at the pub then all rushed to the window to gawp at what was happening.
I am appalled at their behaviour. The man wasn't drunk (he had been to visit a friend) and did not deserve to be left out in the cold. It sickens me to think society has deteriorated so far that a man with a head injury is left outside in the cold in the early hours of a February morning.
The simple act of opening the door and allowing him in for ten minutes wouldn't have made the slightest difference to them.
We regret the unfortunate circumstances that occurred on Friday night.
The manager was unaware of any injury until the ambulance arrived.
The Station closes at 1am and our licence is at stake if anyone is let in to the premises after midnight.
We will hold an investigation into the matter immediately.
