Thank you for your report on the court case of Hollington versus Southern Water Services (The Argus, February 27).

I must take issue with the implication that my brother and I are the only people to hear this noise aggravation.

In order for the case to proceed, we obtained the statutory signatures of two witnesses who had heard the noise. Indeed, we could have got a dozen but followed the standard procedure of obtaining two.

However, as I believe my arguments are conclusive and I thought the presence of witnesses would have been superfluous, I did not ask them to attend.

Be assured that my brother and I shall pursue this matter until we have arrived at a satisfactory and judicious conclusion.

I'm sure Michael Howard will be grateful to Jo Dillon (The Argus, February 26) for showcasing "eye-catching" Tory proposals that would be of enormous benefit to motorists.

However, as we lay out in greater detail the plans for the next Conservative government, I hope Jo will be more careful in reporting just what we are pledging.

Nobody would disagree with her that lives are worth more than votes.

That is why Mr Howard took such pains to explain that we fully support speed cameras where there is a genuine need to slow down motorists because of a history of accidents.

But it is startling that since Labour came to office, more than two million motorists a year are penalised with fines and points on their licences, when the figure in the final full year of Conservative administration was about 250,000.

Needless to say, the funds generated by fines have been beyond the Chancellor's wildest dreams and have saved the Treasury vast sums in financial support for police.

When speed cameras have become a tool to raise income for the Treasury rather than simply to save lives, something has gone badly wrong.

Finally, with regard to her quip about Pavilion's Conservative prospective MP Mike Weatherley, the people of Brighton Pavilion will indeed be the lucky ones if and when he represents them after the next election.

He is an excellent candidate, full of energy and enthusiasm and, as a local man with an extensive track record in business, he will make an excellent MP.
