I wish to say thank you to Mrs P, the longest-serving dinner lady in West Sussex who died recently in Crawley, aged 91.
In March 1999, West Sussex County Council's Tory-controlled education committee made 550 dinner ladies redundant by voting to axe hot school meals for 64,000 primary-aged children in 242 county schools, hastily ripping out the kitchens during the school holidays.
I wish heaven had waited that little bit longer before taking up Mrs P.
