Concrete maker RMC, which recently opened an asphalt plant in Shoreham, is planning to shed 225 jobs in the UK this year.
The Surrey-based group said the losses would follow the merger of its ready-mixed concrete and aggregates businesses.
However, a spokesman said it was unlikely any jobs would go at the Shoreham plant, which opened last June and employs about ten people.
RMC is the world's fourth-largest building materials company, with a £5 billion turnover and 31,000 staff in 26 countries.
It employs about 6,500 people in the UK with 300 concrete plants and 140 quarries in several locations, including Rugby, Buxton and Milton Keynes.
