So, British officials in charge of visa applications have done it again (The Argus, March 1).

The experience of Mr and Mrs Oghan echoes that of my wife and myself in the early 1990s.

I think the Oghans' alleged mistake over the choice of Mr Oghan's father-in-law as sponsor is likely to be no more than an excuse on the part of the entry clearance staff.

After my own experience, I think those staff are under pressure from above to minimise the number of visas issued - even if they have to resort to underhand tactics to do so.

The "errors of fact" in the interview transcript made by consular officials in my wife's case support this viewpoint.

Good luck, Mr and Mrs Oghan. We succeeded and my wife is now an NHS nurse.

The powers-that-be made a rod for their own back when they decided in the 1970s that a hard line on immigration should be introduced. In our case they nearly missed a cracking good nurse.
