Having followed with interest the speeding debate in the letters page, I have come to the conclusion that some drivers have an inflated opinion of their driving prowess and their ability to cope with adverse factors and the unexpected while driving at high speed.

Furthermore, they appear to be more concerned with money than safety. I have observed that, since the recent appearance of speed cameras on the A24 at Dial Post, northbound traffic suddenly slows, in some cases to about 50mph, in the 60mph stretch. Previously, perhaps 50 per cent of drivers blatantly ignored the speed restrictions.

This seems to suggest that people will drive within the speed limits in order to avoid a fine and penalty points on their licences but, in the absence of a financial deterrent, they are prepared to put at risk their own lives and the lives of others.
