The Tories are sadly mistaken if they think a series of underground car parks will "help to ease the problems of motorists in Brighton and Hove" (The Argus March 13).

Don't they understand that extra car parking spaces would generate yet more traffic, causing even greater gridlock rather than relieving it? Do the Tories also know the cost of providing underground car parking? It is about £10,000 per space.

So it would be an expensive way to to worsen the problem rather than solving it. The solution? A reduction in the number of car parking spaces, not an increase.
