It seems park and ride is considered to be the solution to all our problems.
At the Brighton and Hove City Forum this week (The Argus, March 19) it was claimed to be the solution to traffic pollution around Preston Circus.
At a recent think tank on affordable housing organised by the Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership, it was also claimed to be a solution to the housing shortage.
Park and ride will do nothing but provide yet more parking places. It would only reduce traffic pollution if it was combined with a reduction in the number of city centre parking spaces and even then would merely shift pollution from the city centre to its fringes.
Solving our housing shortage by encouraging commuting to a park and ride site would also increase traffic and therefore pollution, not to mention the disadvantages of lengthening the working day.
