With reference to Marc Quinn's sculpture of Alison Lapper, many of us do support people with physical, mental and learning disabilities and help to give them a better quality of life.
We admire Alison Lapper and all she has achieved against adversity, not least in producing another wonderful human being, "her little boy", but I think she would be treated with more respect for displaying her "art" rather than her naked body, beautiful though it may be.
Pregnancy is a very private and personal affair - at least, this is what I felt when I was pregnant. And people who themselves cannot have a child do not want a constant reminder of something that is often a very great sadness to them and their partners.
Had nobody thought of putting a sculpture of Pope John Paul II or Blessed Mother Teresa on the plinth, or would that be too constructive? Both these people have and had great compassion for people disadvantaged in
any way.
