Coroner's officials are investigating the death of a man found hanged in the hospital wing at Lewes Prison.
Stanley Denyer, 47, used a sweatshirt to hang himself in the jail's B-wing, which is being used as a makeshift hospital while a new facility is built.
Two years ago Lewes had one of the worst records for prison suicides in the country but Mr Denyer's death on March 8 was the first this year.
Nurses found him within minutes and tried to revive him, without success.
Mr Denyer, from Winchester, had a history of mental illness.
He was transferred to Lewes after appearing before Winchester magistrates, charged with assaulting a police officer.
Five Lewes inmates killed themselves during 2002. Only Durham, with six, had more.
Staff at Lewes increased preventative measures, such as first-night mental health reviews of new arrivals and better training for warders, to tackle self-harm.
Convicted sex attacker Leon David Marshall, 27, who was found hanged in his cell last September, was the only prisoner to die at Lewes in 2003.
