Mark McGhee was named Nationwide Division Two manager-of-the-month today.
The Albion boss said: "I thought it was an April Fool when Martin Hinshelwood (the Seagulls director of football) told me."
McGhee has earned his reward after guiding Albion to four wins and a draw in six matches during March.
He said: "It's very satisfying. It's testament to what a great month we've had.
"The award is for the players through me. The boys have worked so hard."
He is the first Albion manager to win the award since Peter Taylor, who went on to guide the Seagulls to the Division Two title two years ago.
McGhee said: "It would be fantastic if we do the same, although I can't see that."
