DA Coles is quite correct to say there is no perfect system for choosing a head of state (Letters, April 2).
But there are good systems and bad systems.
A bad system is one based on snobbery, class division, elitism and the principle of inherited privilege and power.
A good system is democratic, transparent and accessible to everyone. This is not a difficult or controversial choice.
We need to ask a basic question - "Do we want the best democracy possible?"
The answer is surely: "Yes".
Abolition of the monarchy would make our system more democratic, more accountable and more accessible. It has to be better than what we have.
