Lewes chairman Terry Parris has insisted there must be no repeat of Monday's trouble when Lewes and Worthing go head-to-head again next week.

Three players were sent off in an explosive finish to the derby clash when a brawl broke out following an injury-time penalty miss by Worthing's Darren Freeman.

Rebels pair Freeman and Shaun Grice both saw red along with Lewes defender Michael Harvey, who had to be manhandled from the pitch after being ordered off by referee John Rowbury.

The trouble continued in the dressing room area as a Worthing official clashed with a Lewes player.

Last season the corresponding fixture was similarly explosive after Lewes manager Jimmy Quinn clashed with Worthing's Ben Carrington.

Since then relations between the clubs have improved dramatically, which was reflected in the behaviour of both sets of supporters in the crowd of 932 on Monday.

Now Lewes chairman Parris wants the two managers to ensure people will be talking about the football rather than flashpoints when the two sides meet at Woodside Road on Tuesday.

Parris said: "We don't want it to start all over again on Tuesday and I'm sure it won't. But it is down to us as clubs to ensure it is played in the best spirit.

"We will be telling our manger (Steven King) that it is really important that whatever happens, everybody conducts themselves in the proper way.

"The ill-discipline was down to several individuals who took things into their own hands.

"It is up to the clubs to pick out the individuals who are causing trouble and make sure they understand how they should behave so that we don't get any repeat of what happened.

"At 9.30 on Tuesday night we want everybody to be talking about a great game of football rather than anything else that has happened."

Lewes have suffered a spate of red cards in recent weeks. Junior Kadi, Justin Harris and Kirk Watts have just returned from bans while Dwain Clarke starts a three-match suspension when the Rooks visit another Sussex side, Horsham, tomorrow.

Worthing had only had two players sent off this season - both for second bookable offences - before Monday's clash and manager Alan Pook believes the referee should take some of the blame.

He said: "It was a shame that this all happened at the end because there was no sign of it during the game.

"There were a few players from both sides who lost their heads but if the referee had been in control it wouldn't have happened."

Pook said he would await the referee's report before deciding to take any internal action but confirmed Freeman and Grice would be suspended for the Sussex Senior Cup final against Albion Reserves on May 3.

The Rebels manager also insisted relations between the clubs off the pitch were at "an all-time high".

He said: "There has been a lot of bridge-building since last season. We have played Lewes twice already this season without any incidents.

"Whoever comes along on Tuesday will see a great game of football between two teams in the top four who are battling for promotion."
