The rise of 4x4 drivers and people carriers on the road is deplorable.
I am a lady motorcyclist and, although I ride a big, powerful bike carefully and within the speed limit, I still have constant run-ins with these people.
The vehicles are so high they obstruct my view at junctions and roundabouts and make it impossible to see the road ahead.
Their drivers rarely seem to notice that motorbike riders exist from their lofty height. They mostly seem to drive in a cavalier fashion with scant regard for other road users.
Nobody should be driving these vehicles unless they are regularly going off road, are farmers or live in a remote area of the countryside.
Most of the vehicles I see are driven by women and appear to be for the sole purpose of driving their one child to school in the morning or going shopping. Why?
This is not a new phenomenon. I remember the comedian Alexei Sayle in the Eighties quipping, "It's so important to have four-wheel-drive when you're going down to Sainsbury's".
