Rugby club colleagues have paid tribute to popular teenager Kieran Smith after he was found dead in the sea.

Police last night named 18-year-old Kieran as the person spotted in the surf off Newquay beach by a member of the public last Saturday just after 11am.

Kieran, nicknamed "Kizza", was in Cornwall on a rugby tour with his club, Horsham RFC.

He had not returned to his accommodation on Friday night but the alarm was not raised until the morning when his body was discovered.

Rugby club chairman Barry Johnson said: "Horsham RFC were deeply shocked to hear of the death of one of our U18 rugby team members while the team was on tour to the West Country.

"The squad is very close-knit, having been together for a number of years.

"They have particularly excellent playing results and enjoy their tours together and it's understandable that many of them are devastated over the sudden and unexplained death of a lively member of the squad.

"The club's thoughts are with the parents to whom we send our sincere condolences."

He said the team were yet to decide whether to play in the Sussex Cup final in Brighton against Eastbourne this weekend.

The club's annual dinner is due to take place next week but may now be postponed.

A police spokesman said the teenager had been out with team-mates on Friday night after losing to Penzance.

Detectives said they were treating the incident as an unexplained death and did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

They were checking CCTV footage of the town on Friday night to try to trace the man's movements.

A minute's silence was held at Redruth Rugby Club on Saturday when they were due to play Horsham before the tragedy forced the game's postponement.

A second forensic post-mortem was carried out on the body and an inquest will be opened later this week to determine the cause of death.

Kieran's family, from Surrey, were last night too upset to talk about his death.
