Brighton will host Britain's first powerboating Grand Prix.
Sixteen teams from across the world will race from Brighton Marina at speeds of up to 150mph during the weekend of July 23 to 25.
The race will be the third in the Powerboat P1 World Championship Grand Prix calendar, which begins in Malta in May and ends in Spain in October.
British hopes will rest on the Buzzi Bullet team's Drew Langdon in the SuperSport category.
He said: "I'm really looking forward to this season, particularly now we are going to have a British Grand Prix in Brighton.
"It's tremendous to be able to race in front of a home crowd and in conditions we know very well.
Adam Bates, Brighton and Hove City Council's head of tourism, described the free event as a "fantastic" opportunity.
He said the council would closely monitor noise levels and safety rules.
Organiser Nathan Knight, managing director of the UIM Powerboat P1 World Championship, said: "We chose Brighton because it is the premier resort in the UK.
"It has experience of organising successful events and there is a big incidence of companies connected with the marine industry."
Friday, July 23, will be a practice day, followed by an endurance race from Brighton to Newhaven and back to the marina via Shoreham on Saturday.
Sunday will feature the races that count towards the Powerboat P1 World Championship.
Races will be split into two categories: Evolution Class for prototype boats and SuperSport Class for production boats.
Hospitality tents are likely to be placed at the Black Rock site to the west of the marina.
