After reading your story about Edward Romain being turned down by six universities, including this one (The Argus, April 23), I note that you did not mention that independent and state school applicants had a similar chance of gaining admission at Magdalene College this year.
This fact indicates there is no prejudice against candidates from either sector and it seems to me a serious omission from your article.
You also did not make it clear that Mr Romain was certainly not told by anyone involved with admissions here at Magdalene either to wear jeans or to change his accent.
I can only assume it was his school or some other advisor who suggested these ideas to him.
Although we do not discuss details of any candidate's application, I can tell you that Mr Romain's clothing and voice made no difference at all to the outcome of his application and they are not factors which we would ever take into account.
