Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Saturday-Sunday May 22-23

With a cast list that reads like the who's who of coolest music people ever, this is bound to get the collective juices flowing, whether you're a fan of Leonard Cohen or not.

The likes of Laurie "Oh, Superman" Anderson, Brighton's own Nick Cave, country giants the Handsome Family, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Martha Wainwright and cabaret crooner Rufus Wainwright are all going on stage with their special take on songs from the king of downbeat Americana.

Perhaps the world's unlikeliest rock star, Cohen was a published poet and novelist when he began putting his socially conscious, literate prose to music in the late Sixties.

What followed was 30 years of melancholy and infinite sadness that triggered a folk music coup and legend with heartfelt classics such as Suzanne, Bird On A Wire and Famous Blue Raincoat.

Perfect material for this event's chosen performers, the whole thing was pulled together by Hal Willner, who is among the most eclectic and original producers in contemporary music.

Steering a series of wildly ambitious concept albums which tapped the talents of artists running the gamut from pop to jazz to the avant-garde, he has worked with the likes of Robert Altman on Short Cuts as well as artists including Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello and Iggy Pop.

If this wasn't enough, the musical director is none other than former Lounge Lizard Steve Bernstein, who is joined by Cohen's original backing singers, Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen.

Such credentials across the board are certainly very impressive, as well as perhaps proof that Cohen's relevance to contemporary culture has remained undiminished.

It might seem a long time since the heady Sixties when he introduced audiences to his unique world but this kind of twist shows just what a genius he still really is.
