Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Wednesday May 19
You might not think you know who Mory Kante is, but you're bound to have heard his hit.
"Yeke, Yeke," with its infectious chorus, got everyone from Mali to Manhattan to twitch their collective tush. Think you don't know who he is now?
A Guinean Kora master and singer, Kante made his name alongside Salif Keita in Seventies supergroup The Rail Band.
Mixing up West African mande with Cuban mambo, all dosed up with a liberal sprinkling of James Brown, his are hypnotic rhythms.
Joining him on stage is guitar virtuoso and singer Manecas Costa, who has put the former Portuguese colony of Guinea Bissau firmly on the world music map.
He returns following an outstanding concert in the festival last year.
Combining the creole rhythms of traditional gumbe with richly melodic songcraft, his unique music is deeply rooted in his Mandinkan heritage, though it remains remarkably contemporary.
The last of the trio is Modeste Hugues, from Madagascar, who grew up in the same street as guitar legend D'Gary.
Like his mentor, Modeste's harmonic flurries and listing melodies derive from the traditional guitar-like mervan, in which bass, rhythm and melody are played simultaneously.
A truly fantastic combination of African talents, this is a rare opportunity to see such masters playing together.
