Am I alone in suspecting that traffic in Brighton and Hove will grind to halt soon?

I am fed up sitting in traffic for ages only to find the cause of the obstruction is a small hole, half completed and two operatives sitting in a van drinking tea.

It seems everywhere you go there are roadworks in progress,

for example, the A259 Coast Road and Lewes Road to name some of the worst.

Does Brighton and Hove City Council plan, co-ordinate and manage the roadworks? Contractors seem to get away with poor traffic management which causes chaos.

Why does all the work take so long? Even simple kerbing and block paving takes ages to complete.

In fact, with some sites I often think that never has so little taken so long. They build autobahns in Germany faster than we can tarmac a cycle track.

If the council was sharper and managed its contractors properly to ensure suitable traffic management legislation was met, then we would all be able to move around the city more freely.

In addition, active supervision and strict penalty clauses against contractors who do not meet their targets would speed up essential works considerably.
